A man injured in an alleged drag race involving a car in which a three-month-old baby was a passenger has died in hospital.
Nathan Russell, 37, suffered a massive head injury when the car he was driving crashed into a power pole in Melbourne's north on Thursday night, after it was allegedly sideswiped by his friend's car.
Victoria Police said Mr Russell, of Epping, died in hospital on Saturday.
The dead man's friend, 28-year-old Duane Lindsey of Strathmore, has been charged with one count of negligently causing serious injury and was denied bail in a hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.
The court was told Lindsey had been driving through Melbourne's northern suburbs with his 22-year-old girlfriend and their 12-week-old baby girl in the car, allegedly reaching speeds more than 40km/h over the limit.
Police said following Mr Russell's death investigators would now review the charges against Lindsey.
He will appear in court again on February 17.
